LEonardo Piermartiri

Professor of Viola, head of the music Department

He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Maryland studying with Katherine Murdock, where he focused on the work of Italian composer Luciano Berio. He received his Master of Music from the University of Cincinnati, awarded a scholarship from the VITAE Foundation, and subsequently studied for two years at the Cleveland Institute of Music Professional Studies program with Robert Vernon. Following that, he played for four years at the Virginia Symphony and taught at the Academy of Music in Norfolk-VA. Most recently, Leonardo concluded his year as a Visiting Researcher at the University of North Texas in collaboration with Daphne Gerling and Susan Dubois, where he dedicated to the study of Coordination, a set of principles and techniques developed by the late violist Karen Tuttle. He also continues to perform and records regularly with the Camerata Florianópolis chamber music as principal viola. At UDESC, Leonardo coordinates research and outreach programs that promote the creation and study of Brazilian´s new repertoire, concerts, and masterclasses for the viola.
